    Benesse Holdings, Inc., and the Fukutake Foundation have been working together for over 30 years to develop communities with a focus on art through projects and activities led by Benesse Art Site Naoshima.

    The artwork exhibited at Benesse Art Site Naoshima has been created to take advantage of specially designed buildings and the pristine backdrop of Japan’s Seto Inland Sea.

    Artwork is not only exhibited inside buildings, but also displayed outside in natural spaces, creating settings that are unique to the island of Naoshima. Designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the Museum opened in 1992 as a part of the Benesse Art Site Naoshima project, which aimed to create an art-filled, sustainable community that celebrates the coexistence of art, nature, and architecture.

    Some of his notable works include the Church of the Light, the Water Temple, and the Pulitzer Arts Foundation. Ando is recognized for his innovative use of concrete, which he often leaves exposed, and his careful consideration of the relationship between buildings and their surroundings. The large windows allow you to appreciate the view of the Inland Sea and modern art from any seat while you enjoy a meal in this extraordinary space.

    The main island and the surrounding Naoshima group of islands form the town of Naoshima in Kagawa Prefecture. Activities mainly based on the island of Naoshima to develop the community through art eventually led to the establishment of an international contemporary art festival called the Setouchi Triennale. This allows visitors to appreciate the meaning of art on an even deeper level.

    He has won numerous awards for his work, including the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1995, considered the highest honor in the field of architecture.
